Can Bed Bugs Live in Your Clothes?

Heat treatment ducting delivering hot air into a house to kill bed bugs

“Can bed bugs live in my clothes?” is one of the most common questions we are asked — usually by someone worried they will have to throw everything away. The reassuring news is that you almost never do. But clothing does play a real role in how bed bugs hide and spread, so here is the full picture.

§02

Do bed bugs live in the clothes you’re wearing?

Almost never. Unlike head lice, bed bugs do not live on the human body. They are put off by the warmth and constant movement of clothes that are being worn, and they prefer to shelter in a still, dark spot near the bed, coming out to feed while you sleep and then retreating. So the outfit you have on is not where they live.

§03

Where in clothing bed bugs do hide

The risk is with clothing that sits still:

  • Clothes stored in drawers and wardrobes near an infested bed
  • Laundry piles left on the floor or on a chair
  • Clothes packed in a suitcase or holdall — especially after a hotel stay
  • Items in storage bags kept under or beside the bed
§04

How bed bugs travel in clothes and luggage

Clothing and luggage are among the main ways bed bugs move between properties. A few bugs or eggs tucked into a bag after a trip is the classic route into a new home — it is also why the problem so often appears a week or two after travelling. If you have recently been away and started getting bitten, your luggage and the clothes in it are the first things to treat.

Travel habit that helps: keep your suitcase off the bed and off the floor (use a luggage rack or the bathroom), and run everything through a hot dryer when you get home.

§05

Do you need to throw your clothes away?

No. This is worth repeating because people panic and bin belongings unnecessarily. Heat kills bed bugs at every life stage, and clothing is one of the easiest things to heat-treat. Binning clothes is almost always a waste.

§06

How to treat clothes for bed bugs

  • Hot wash at 60°C where the fabric allows.
  • Hot tumble dry for at least 30 minutes — the most reliable step, and it works even for items that only need drying, not washing.
  • Seal treated items in clean bags until the infestation is cleared, so they cannot be re-infested.
  • During a professional heat treatment, clothing left in the room is treated along with everything else — no separate laundering needed. Our preparation guide explains what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can bed bugs live on the clothes you are wearing?

Very rarely. Bed bugs don’t live on your body the way head lice do — they dislike the heat and movement of clothes being worn. They hide near the bed and feed at night, then retreat. Clothing that is stored, piled up or in a suitcase is a different matter.

Do I need to throw my clothes away?

No. You almost never need to bin clothing over bed bugs. Heat destroys them: a hot wash and or 30+ minutes in a hot tumble dryer kills all life stages, and professional heat treatment treats clothing in the room.

Does washing clothes kill bed bugs?

A hot wash at 60°C followed by a hot tumble dry will kill bed bugs and eggs in clothing. The tumble dryer heat is the most reliable step — even items that only need drying benefit from 30 minutes on high heat.

Can bed bugs travel on clothing?

Yes — this is one of the main ways they spread. Bed bugs tuck into bags, luggage and stored or piled clothing and move between homes that way, which is why they are so common after travel.
