How Long Does Bed Bug Heat Treatment Take?

Bed bug heat treatment set up at a Victorian terraced house

Most bed bug heat treatments take between 6 and 10 hours from set-up to completion. You will need to leave the property for the full duration — but you can almost always return home the same evening.

§02

Typical Treatment Durations

4–6 hrs

Single room or studio flat

6–8 hrs

1 to 3-bedroom property

8–12 hrs

Large property or severe infestation

These are total times from when our team arrives to when the property is ready to return to. The active heating period — where rooms are held at the target temperature — is typically 4–6 hours. Equipment set-up and cool-down time add to the total.

§03

What Affects Treatment Duration

Property size

Larger properties require more equipment and take longer to heat evenly. A single bedroom can often be treated in a half-day. A five-bedroom house with multiple living areas will take closer to a full day.

Severity of infestation

A heavy or long-established infestation requires a longer temperature hold time to ensure complete penetration into every harborage point. An infestation that has spread across several rooms each needs its own full treatment time.

Property construction

Properties with thick masonry walls, concrete floors, or very large rooms take longer to bring up to temperature than a standard domestic bedroom. Loft conversions and basement rooms can also add to the overall duration.

Preparation

A well-prepared property heats faster and more evenly. Rooms with excessive clutter can have cold spots that require additional time to reach temperature. This is one of the key reasons our preparation guide matters — good preparation directly reduces treatment time and improves results.

§04

What Happens During Treatment

Our technicians set up industrial-grade heating and air-circulation equipment throughout the treatment area. The temperature is raised gradually to ensure even distribution and avoid damage to furnishings. Calibrated sensors placed around the room — including inside mattresses and behind large furniture — confirm that every area reaches and holds the target temperature of 56°C.

Our team remains on-site throughout the treatment to monitor conditions and adjust equipment as needed.

§05

Do You Need to Leave?

Yes. The treatment area must be fully vacated for the duration — people, pets, and plants. Most customers arrange to spend the day with friends or family, or simply out for the day. We give you a clear estimated return time when you book.

§06

When Can You Return Home?

You can return once the property has cooled to a normal temperature — usually 1–2 hours after treatment ends. There is no chemical residue, no odour, and no waiting period beyond the cool-down. You can sleep in the treated rooms the same night.

§07

Is One Treatment Enough?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. Because heat kills all life stages including eggs, there is no second generation to hatch and restart the cycle. Follow-up visits are included in our quoted price at no extra charge — if any residual activity is found, we will return. This is uncommon after a properly conducted treatment.
